Pelicans Eyeing Dejounte Murray Over Trae Young

By Rell Wright, Pelicans Contributor

The New Orleans Pelicans are reportedly more interested in acquiring Dejounte Murray rather than Trae Young from the Atlanta Hawks, as per Christen Clark of NOLA.com. Clark noted, “If the Pelicans reengaged the Hawks, they could look to pry away Murray or Young. Even though Young is the more talented player, the Pelicans seem to hold more interest in Murray, league sources said.

The 6-5 Murray is not as much of a defensive liability as the 6-1 Young can be. He is also on a cheaper contract; Murray will make $25.5 million next season, while Young is owed $43 million.” The dynamic between Murray and Young hasn’t been as effective as hoped, with both players excelling primarily as the main ball-handler. Murray’s potential fit alongside CJ McCollum, who struggles with point-of-attack defense, makes him a preferable target for the Pelicans.

Adding Murray would bring additional size, playmaking, and scoring to the Pelicans’ backcourt. Known for his reliable perimeter defense, Murray played in 78 games for the Hawks this season, averaging 22.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 6.4 assists, with shooting percentages of 45.9% from the field and 36.3% from three-point range. His scoring ability combined with defensive skills would be a valuable asset, especially if the Pelicans were to lose Brandon Ingram. Murray’s overall game complements the Pelicans’ need for a more balanced and defensively solid team, making him an ideal candidate to strengthen their roster.
