Pelicans Fall in Lottery: What’s Next?
By Rell Wright, Pelicans Contributor
The NBA Draft Lottery didn’t go as planned for the New Orleans Pelicans, as they tumbled to the seventh overall pick despite hopes of landing higher. Represented by Zion Williamson, the Pelicans found themselves leapfrogged by three teams. The news is particularly daunting, with the top two picks likely heading to divisional rivals—the Dallas Mavericks and San Antonio Spurs.
Both teams now have the opportunity to draft transformative talents, which could tilt the balance of power in the Southwest Division. The implications for New Orleans are significant as they navigate a pivotal offseason. Questions loom about Willie Green’s future as head coach, with whispers of a potential administrative role surfacing. Green’s leadership will be crucial as the Pelicans strive to maximize their young core and break free from the middle of the pack.
While the lottery results sting, the seventh pick still offers the Pelicans a chance to add another promising piece to their foundation. With Zion Williamson, Herb Jones, and Trey Murphy III already in place, the addition of another young talent could solidify a dynamic core for years to come.
The direction of the franchise under the leadership of Joe Dumars and the front office, however, remains under scrutiny. Key decisions, such as potentially moving on from veteran guard CJ McCollum to give the younger players more opportunities, could reshape the team’s identity. Dumars’ vision will dictate whether New Orleans becomes a perennial contender or remains stuck in the lottery cycle.
Beyond the draft, trade rumors add another layer of intrigue to the Pelicans’ offseason. The possibility of acquiring a player like Giannis Antetokounmpo has been floated, with New Orleans holding significant draft capital from previous trades. Leveraging their assets to pursue a superstar could catapult the team into championship contention.
Still, the Pelicans’ focus must remain on internal growth and stability. The seventh pick in the 2025 draft is a coin flip—it could yield a cornerstone player or a complementary piece. Either way, New Orleans must ensure its young talent is positioned for success in what promises to be a fascinating offseason.
