Pelicans fall short to the Rockets 104-101, drop 4 in a row

by Rell Wright/Pelican Contributor

In a highly anticipated matchup marking the debut of both the New Orleans Pelicans and the Houston Rockets in the NBA In-Season Tournament, the Toyota Center witnessed a gripping showdown that unfolded like a playoff thriller. The Pelicans entered the fourth quarter with a seemingly comfortable 79-70 lead, but the Rockets staged a remarkable comeback.

Houston’s Fred VanVleet, with ice in his veins, drained back-to-back 3-pointers in the final minute, propelling the Rockets to a dramatic 104-101 victory. Brandon Ingram led the Pelicans’ charge with an impressive 31-point performance, while Zion Williamson contributed 24 points and eight rebounds, and Jonas Valančiūnas made his presence felt with 15 points, nine rebounds, and four blocks.

The Rockets had established a commanding 14-point lead during the first half, but the Pelicans steadily narrowed the gap as the second quarter drew to a close, leaving the halftime score at 54-48 in favor of Houston. However, the third quarter saw a resurgence from New Orleans, with their spirited play turning the tide.

Notably, Rockets forward Jae’Sean Tate’s ejection late in the second quarter due to a second technical foul for disputing officiating decisions added another layer of intrigue to the contest. Ultimately, the Rockets secured their fifth consecutive victory, with Jalen Green contributing 25 points and Alperen Sengun adding 24 to their triumphant cause. The Pelicans now look to regroup as they prepare to host the Dallas Mavericks in their next matchup on Sunday night.
