Pelicans Fire VP David Griffin, Look to Hire Joe Dumars
By Rell Wright, Pelicans Contributor
The New Orleans Pelicans made a bold move on Monday, parting ways with Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations David Griffin. The decision comes after a disappointing 21-61 season that ranks among the franchise’s worst since relocating to New Orleans in 2002.
Griffin’s tenure, which began in 2019, was marked by high expectations following the drafting of Zion Williamson, but consistent on-court success proved elusive. The team cycled through three head coaches and struggled with roster continuity, floor spacing, and injury woes, culminating in this drastic leadership overhaul. As Governor Gayle Benson emphasized in her statement, the franchise is committed to finding a new leader capable of delivering sustainable success and, ultimately, an NBA championship.
The Pelicans have wasted no time in identifying potential replacements, with Hall of Famer Joe Dumars emerging as a frontrunner for the position. Dumars, a Louisiana native, brings an impressive résumé, including a 2004 NBA Championship and Executive of the Year honors during his tenure with the Detroit Pistons.
Currently leading NBA basketball operations, Dumars is well-regarded for his strategic vision and ability to craft competitive rosters. Sources indicate that the Pelicans and Dumars are already in discussions, with a deal potentially finalized by week’s end. Dumars’ deep ties to Louisiana and proven track record of building winners make him an ideal candidate to reshape the Pelicans’ culture and bring much-needed stability to the front office.
While Dumars’ arrival would mark a new chapter, significant challenges remain. The Pelicans must address the lingering question of how to maximize Zion Williamson’s immense talent while maintaining his health and availability. Willie Green, who has earned respect as a coach, remains at the helm for now, but his future could hinge on the next executive’s vision.
Beyond coaching, the Pelicans’ priorities include improving roster construction to enhance shooting, playmaking, and rim protection. With Dumars potentially steering the ship, Pelicans supporters can hope for a cohesive strategy and a team capable of climbing the Western Conference standings. For a franchise eager to shed years of inconsistency, this leadership transition represents a pivotal moment.
