The Detroit Pistons are reportedly close to hiring New Orleans Pelicans general manager Trajan Langdon as their president of basketball operations. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the two sides are “beginning work” on an agreement. Langdon, who has been the second-in-command under David Griffin in New Orleans since 2019, brings a wealth of experience, including previous roles as a scout with the San Antonio Spurs and assistant general manager of the Brooklyn Nets. Langdon will take over a Pistons roster that struggled to a 14-68 season, with current head of basketball operations, Troy Weaver, likely to be demoted. The future of head coach Monty Williams, who signed a six-year, $76 million contract last offseason, remains uncertain, with Pistons owner Tom Gores reportedly willing to cover the cost of firing Williams if Langdon chooses to do so.

In other Pelicans news, the team has decided to part ways with assistant athletic trainer Jana Austin, who had worked closely with star forward Zion Williamson. Christian Clark of NOLA.com reported Thursday that Austin, who had been with the team since 2020, was let go following the healthiest season of Williamson’s career. This move is part of broader changes to the Pelicans’ medical staff, which included reassigning Aaron Nelson from vice president of player care and performance to an advisory role, and hiring Amy Atmore as director of rehabilitation. These changes were aimed at improving the overall health and performance of the team, which saw significant benefits this past season.

Additionally, Pelicans Associate Head Coach James Borrego is rumored to be in consideration for head coaching positions with both the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Los Angeles Lakers. Borrego, who helped elevate the Pelicans’ offense and increase their win total during the 2023-24 season, is reportedly being looked at following JB Bickerstaff’s dismissal from the Cavaliers. His connection with former Pelicans and current Lakers star Anthony Davis could also influence the Lakers’ decision. Borrego’s impressive coaching resume includes stints with the San Antonio Spurs, New Orleans Hornets, Orlando Magic, and Charlotte Hornets. His contributions to the Pelicans this season have been significant, helping the team achieve a better offensive rating and more victories.
