The New Orleans Pelicans and rising star Trey Murphy III have agreed to a massive four-year, $112 million rookie contract extension. This deal, which includes no incentives or player options, ensures Murphy remains a key part of the Pelicans’ future for the next five seasons.
However, fans will have to wait a bit longer to see him back on the court as he is expected to miss the start of the 2024-25 season due to a hamstring injury suffered in practice. Despite this setback, Murphy is poised to continue his role as one of the top 3-and-D wings in the NBA once healthy.
Murphy is coming off a career-best season, averaging 14.8 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.2 assists while shooting 44.3% from the field and 38% from beyond the arc. Since being drafted 17th overall by the Memphis Grizzlies in 2021 and later traded to New Orleans, Murphy has steadily improved his game each season.
Standing at 6-foot-10 with a remarkable 7-foot-5 wingspan, his combination of size, shooting, and defensive ability has made him a key piece of the Pelicans’ success. In 198 career games, he has averaged 11.8 points per game and shot an impressive 39.2% from three-point range.
Looking ahead, the Pelicans are primed to contend in a competitive Western Conference, with high expectations following their acquisition of All-Star guard Dejounte Murray this offseason. Murphy’s presence will be crucial in helping the Pelicans make a playoff push once he returns to full health.
New Orleans opens their season at home against the Chicago Bulls, and while Murphy will be sidelined for now, the team’s long-term success hinges on players like him stepping up when called upon.
