The New Orleans Pelicans have suffered a significant loss with the departure of Assistant Coach Fred Vinson to the Detroit Pistons, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Vinson, who has been a cornerstone of the Pelicans’ coaching staff for the past 14 years, will be joining Monty Williams’ team in Detroit. Renowned for his expertise in shooting, Vinson transitioned into coaching in 2008 and has since built a reputation as one of the NBA’s top “shot doctors,” significantly improving the shooting performances of players like Lonzo Ball and Herbert Jones.
His impact is evident as the Pelicans ranked fourth in the NBA this past season with a .383 3PT%. Vinson’s departure marks another blow to the Pelicans’ offseason, following the exits of former GM Trajan Langdon and Vice President of Basketball Administration Michael Blackstone, both of whom also joined the Pistons. Additionally, top assistant coach James Borrego is currently a candidate for two head coaching positions, further emphasizing the extensive changes within the Pelicans’ organization.
