Pelicans Make a Move to Avoid the Luxury Tax

By Rell Wright Pelicans Contributor

The New Orleans Pelicans have traded veteran center Daniel Theis and a 2031 second-round draft pick to the Oklahoma City Thunder in exchange for cash considerations. This strategic move is aimed at avoiding the NBA luxury tax while providing flexibility for the franchise’s future.

Theis, an eight-year NBA veteran from Germany, has been a reliable presence this season, appearing in 38 games with averages of 4.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.6 assists in 16.3 minutes per game. With the Thunder leading the Western Conference and facing a void at the center position due to Chet Holmgren‘s injury, Theis’s addition gives them much-needed depth and experience.

For the Pelicans, the trade represents a focus on financial prudence and player development. By offloading Theis’s contract and securing cash considerations, New Orleans avoids the luxury tax threshold while doubling down on their younger talent, including rookie Yves Missi and second-year big Karlo Matković. With this trade, the Pelicans also shed future draft obligations, sending the least favorable of their 2031 second-round picks to Oklahoma City.
