Pelicans Soar Past Grizzlies in Season Opener, 111-104

by Rell Wright/Pelican Contributor

In a highly anticipated season-opener, the New Orleans Pelicans showcased their talents by defeating the Memphis Grizzlies 111-104. CJ McCollum, with a commendable performance, put up 24 points, while superstar Zion Williamson chipped in with 23 points and seven boards. Williamson’s exceptional play in the fourth quarter was crucial in stifling any chances of a Grizzlies comeback. Brandon Ingram, not far behind, contributed 19 points, while Jonas Valanciunas posted a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. On the other end, Desmond Bane stood out for Memphis with a whopping 31 points, with Marcus Smart and Xavier Tillman each scoring 17 points, the latter also grabbing 12 rebounds.

The Grizzlies faced a palpable void with the absence of guard Ja Morant, who is serving a 25-game suspension and was their leading scorer last season. This, coupled with injuries plaguing their frontline, left the Grizzlies leaning heavily on small-ball lineups throughout the game. Conversely, the Pelicans came into the game with key players like Ingram and Williamson in peak health, establishing dominance especially in the rebound department, out-rebounding Memphis 52-37. Despite a dip in their lead during the fourth, a seven-point streak extended the Pelicans’ lead to 16, marking their largest lead of the game. The Pelicans will next face off against the New York Knicks on Saturday, setting the stage for another electrifying NBA match-up.
