The New Orleans Pelicans endured a tough second half against the Houston Rockets, falling 109-97 in the first of a two-game home-and-home series. Despite a strong opening quarter that saw the Pelicans jump out to a double-digit lead, they couldn’t sustain their momentum.
Trey Murphy III delivered a standout performance with 26 points, while Zion Williamson posted a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. However, Williamson struggled from the field, shooting just 5-of-15, a testament to Houston’s defensive intensity.
Houston’s Amen Thompson and Alperen Sengun proved to be game-changers in the second half, combining for 43 points and repeatedly exposing defensive lapses by the Pelicans. Thompson, in particular, dazzled with 21 points, 11 rebounds, and a series of electric dunks, including a highlight-reel slam over Yves Missi.
The Rockets seized control with a 9-1 run to start the third quarter and never looked back, extending their lead to as many as 17 points. As the Pelicans head to Houston for the rematch on Saturday, they’ll need to find answers for Houston’s aggressive play and rediscover the rhythm that initially had them in command.
