Pelicans Tame Bulls 123-111, But Lose PG Dejounte Murray to Fractured Left Hand

By Rell Wright, Pelicans Contributor

The New Orleans Pelicans began their 2024-25 season on a high note, defeating the Chicago Bulls 123-111 despite missing Zion Williamson due to illness. Brandon Ingram took control, pouring in 33 points and sealing the game with a baseline turnaround jumper in the final minutes.

Newly-acquired point guard Dejounte Murray impressed in his debut with 14 points, 10 assists, and 8 rebounds, but a fractured left hand in the fourth quarter cut his night short. CJ McCollum also contributed with 23 points, while Jordan Hawkins chipped in 13 off the bench.

The Pelicans’ victory was a collective effort, as rookie center Yves Missi stepped up in Williamson’s absence. Missi, the 21st overall pick, exceeded expectations with 12 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 blocks in 23 minutes. His defensive presence and energetic play earned him a standing ovation late in the game.

Ingram’s leadership was critical, as his third three-pointer capped a decisive 13-2 run, pushing New Orleans’ lead to 107-92 and solidifying their control of the contest. The Bulls struggled with turnovers, committing 21 that led to 30 points for the Pelicans.

The Pelicans now face an early season test as they begin a four-game road trip in Portland without their starting point guard. With Murray sidelined indefinitely, the team will rely on McCollum and Hawkins to handle ball-handling duties, while hoping Williamson returns to full health soon.
