Pelicans Training Camp: Building a Defensive Identity? | PPR

re the New Orleans Pelicans building a defensive identity in training camp? Big Q and Lexxah take on that question in this edition of Pelican Post Game Report, looking at the camp conversation and what needs to translate when the games begin.

For New Orleans, the challenge is making defense a dependable habit. Communication, rebounding and individual accountability will help determine whether the team can turn its talent into connected play.

What a defensive identity should look like

The Who Dat Daily’s assessment: the most useful signs of progress are repeatable. The Pelicans need to get back after missed shots, communicate through screens, protect the paint and finish possessions with rebounds. One impressive stop means less if the next possession ends with an uncovered shooter.

That standard also gives training camp a purpose beyond settling a starting lineup. Coaches need combinations that can cover for one another, recover when the first action breaks down and stay organized under pressure.

Our earlier report on Joe Dumars and Jamahl Mosley’s expectations for the roster provides more background on the team’s priorities.

Talent creates options; consistency earns trust

Zion Williamson, Trey Murphy III and Herb Jones are central to the conversation about how this group fits together. The questions extend to the guards and centers, too: who contains the ball, who communicates the coverage and who finishes the defensive possession?

Those are evaluation questions, not settled rotation decisions. A crowded camp roster creates choices, but the strongest combinations must work at both ends of the floor.
