Pelicans VP Joe Dumars Enlists Troy Weaver to Revitalize Franchise

By Rell Wright, Pelicans Contributor

Joe Dumars, recently appointed as the Pelicans’ president of basketball operations, is wasting no time in reshaping the franchise’s future. Dumars has brought in seasoned executive Troy Weaver as senior vice president of basketball operations, per a report by Marc J. Spears. Weaver, a former Detroit Pistons general manager, is known for his talent evaluation and roster-building expertise.

During his tenure with Detroit (2020-24), Weaver assembled a promising core featuring All-Star Cade Cunningham and standout defenders like Isaiah Stewart and Ausar Thompson. While his tenure was marred by a 14-68 season that ultimately led to his dismissal, his ability to identify and develop talent stood out. Now, Weaver will report directly to Dumars as they aim to transform a Pelicans team coming off a dismal 21-61 campaign.

Weaver’s arrival signals a new chapter for the Pelicans, who hope to leverage his keen eye for young talent and Dumars’ championship pedigree. The partnership between Dumars—the architect of the Pistons’ 2004 NBA title—and Weaver is poised to tackle New Orleans’ long-standing struggles, including a lack of postseason success and roster consistency.

While current GM Bryson Graham retains his role, the addition of Weaver strengthens the front office as the Pelicans aim to build a competitive roster around key players. With a focus on player development, smart drafting, and cap flexibility, the Dumars-Weaver collaboration could be the spark needed to end New Orleans’ championship drought and establish the team as a Western Conference contender.
