The New Orleans Pelicans have decided to waive guard Elfrid Payton, along with forwards Keion Brooks Jr. and Josh Oduro, as well as point guard Trhae Mitchell, as part of their final roster adjustments ahead of the upcoming season. Payton, a former lottery pick selected 10th overall in the 2014 NBA Draft, was a familiar face for Pelicans fans, having played for the team during his career.
He has also spent time with the Orlando Magic, New York Knicks, Phoenix Suns, and even had a stint in Puerto Rico. Most recently, Payton played for the Indiana Mad Ants in the G League. The waived players were on Exhibit 10 contracts, which allow for non-guaranteed training camp invites and make it easier for teams to shuffle players to their G League affiliates.
All four players are expected to join the Birmingham Squadron, the Pelicans’ G League affiliate, where they will aim to impress and potentially earn a call-up during the season. With all of the Pelicans’ two-way contract spots filled, these players will need standout performances to secure an NBA opportunity.
An Exhibit 10 contract allows for a player’s deal to be converted into a two-way contract before the season or ensures guaranteed money if the player remains with the G League team for at least 60 days. Mitchell, Oduro, and Brooks Jr. will likely suit up for Birmingham, while Payton’s veteran experience could make him a valuable asset as he continues his professional journey.
