Chip Kelly ‘s return to the NFL could be short-lived. The Las Vegas Raiders have decided to part ways with him as offensive coordinator, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Kelly spent less than a year with the franchise, joining Pete Carroll ‘s first staff in Las Vegas in February. The Raiders, though, ranked near the bottom of the NFL in several offensive categories, prompting Sunday’s move.
“I spoke with Chip Kelly earlier this evening and informed him of his release as offensive coordinator of the Raiders,” Carroll said in a statement released on Sunday night. “I would like to thank Chip for his service and wish him all the best in the future.”
The Raiders ranked 30th in the league in total offense entering this weekend, averaging just 269.0 yards per game. The rushing offense ranked 31st in the league, gaining just 92.8 yards per contest.
Las Vegas lost to Cleveland 24-10 on Sunday, prompting the change. It was a stark contrast; the Browns made plays with a half dozen or so rookies, while the Raiders struggled to move the ball consistently.
Chip Kelly had returned to the NFL in 2025 after a nine-year absence. He initially began his foray into the top level of the sport in 2013, when he was hired as the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles.
He spent three seasons with the Eagles, winning 10 games in each of his first two seasons before dropping to 6-9 in his third year. He was fired after the franchise took on a downward trajectory.
