Ryan Garcia Cleared of One Banned PED, Still Under Scrutiny for Another

Ryan Garcia, the 25-year-old boxing sensation, remains in the spotlight, not just for his victory over Devin Haney in Brooklyn on April 20, but also for the doping controversy that surrounds him. Recent tests conducted by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) have brought mixed results. While Garcia was cleared of having 19-Norandrosterone in his system, findings for Ostarine were not as favorable. Detected in tests conducted on April 19 and 20, Ostarine’s presence has complicated the athlete’s career. Garcia has called for the B-samples to be tested, a review scheduled for May 22, which he or his representative may attend.

The situation has sparked a flurry of reactions, especially after Garcia’s provocative comments on social media. Claiming innocence, he stated, “So y’all realize I didn’t fail the tests now,” referring to the trace levels of the substances detected. He also controversially admitted to consuming alcohol and cannabis throughout his training camp, suggesting these did not enhance his performance: “If I was on steroids, I would have been in way better shape,” he asserted. With the potential of his recent win being reclassified as a No Contest, the boxing community and regulatory bodies are watching closely. Garcia’s future, both in and out of the ring, hangs in the balance as the sports world awaits the results of the B-sample testing.
