Ryan Garcia Suspended, Haney Loss Erased

By Arthur Rooks Boxing Contributor

Ryan Garcia has been handed a one-year suspension by the New York State Athletic Commission, sources tell ESPN, and his decision victory over Devin Haney has been overturned to a no contest following positive tests for the performance-enhancing drug ostarine. In addition to the suspension, Garcia has forfeited $1 million to Golden Boy Promotions and was fined $10,000 by the commission, according to ESPN’s Mike Coppinger.

This series of events marks a significant setback for Garcia, who had recently celebrated a majority decision win over Haney. The 25-year-old boxer has now announced his retirement from the sport on social media, stating he is “officially retired,” a declaration made prior to the official release of the commission’s decision.

Following the overturning of his victory, it was revealed that Garcia tested positive for ostarine both before and after his bout with Haney. The positive test results were confirmed with his B-sample also testing positive for the banned substance. Despite the findings, Garcia maintains his innocence, citing supplement contamination as the cause of the positive test. His statement emphasized that he has never intentionally used any banned or performance-enhancing substances and decried any claims questioning his integrity as false and defamatory. During his suspension, Garcia will be subject to additional random drug testing, further complicating his future prospects in the sport.
