Saints Add Depth with RB Darrell Williams’ Signing
by Niles Carpenter/Saints Contributor
The New Orleans Saints have made a strategic move by signing running back Darrell Williams, according to information from Nick Underhill. Williams, who spent his initial four seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, faced stiff competition within the team’s depth chart during that time. However, the 2021 season saw a turning point for Williams as he garnered increased playing time, making seven starts and showcasing his versatility. The 28-year-old athlete capitalized on this opportunity, delivering an impressive performance that translated to 558 rushing yards and six touchdowns, accompanied by an additional 452 receiving yards and two scores.
As the Saints navigate a scenario where star running back Alvin Kamara is temporarily absent, a significant portion of the backfield responsibilities now rest on the shoulders of newly acquired free agent Jamaal Williams and third-round rookie Kendre Miller. Unfortunately, the team faced an injury scare when Miller suffered a knee sprain during a recent preseason victory. Despite the setback, reports from Tom Pelissero of NFL Network indicate that Miller is expected to make a timely recovery without the need for surgery, keeping the possibility of his return by Week 1 intact. Additionally, the Saints explored their options by conducting a workout with former Green Bay Packer running back Kylin Hill, further highlighting their commitment to reinforcing their running back lineup.
With the signing of Darrell Williams and the dynamic mix of established players and promising rookies, the New Orleans Saints are making strategic moves to ensure a robust and versatile backfield even in the absence of key players.
