Saints Consider Adding Depth with Tryout of OL Trai Turner & DE Kyle Phillips

by Avery Devereaux/ Saints Contributor

The New Orleans Saints are leaving no stone unturned as they seek to strengthen their roster for the upcoming NFL season, and their recent tryouts with veteran players Trai Turner and Kyle Phillips are a testament to that. Turner, a highly-regarded offensive lineman, boasts an impressive career, having earned the distinction as one of the best guards in football during his tenure with the Carolina Panthers. His remarkable performance earned him five consecutive Pro Bowl appearances from 2015 to 2019, making him a seasoned and valuable addition to any team. At 30 years old, Turner’s experience and skillset make him a potentially crucial depth signing for the Saints, particularly in light of the injury-riddled 2022 season where the team had to rely on ten different offensive linemen to navigate through challenges.

The Saints are actively seeking to fortify their roster and improve upon last year’s shortcomings. Turner, alongside promising 2023 fourth-round pick Nick Saldiveri, presents a potential upgrade over the team’s previous backup options. Although Turner’s form has been variable during his recent stints with different teams, his talent and Pro Bowl pedigree suggest that he can still make a significant impact in the league, given the right opportunity and system.

On the defensive end, the Saints have their sights set on Kyle Phillips, who impressed during the tryout session. Phillips has worked diligently to overcome an undisclosed injury that sidelined him towards the end of the 2021 season and prevented him from participating in any games throughout 2022. However, with renewed health and determination, Phillips is eager to make his mark in the 2023 season. His performance during his three years with the Jets from 2019 to 2021 showcased his ability to contribute effectively on defense, recording a total of 65 tackles, including 2.5 sacks, across 29 games. The Saints’ coaching staff is closely evaluating Phillips’ potential to strengthen their defensive front and provide valuable depth in the pursuit of a successful season.
