In several significant moves today, the New Orleans Saints announced their final roster cuts for the 2023 NFL season, under the direction of Executive Vice President/General Manager, Mickey Loomis. These roster adjustments come as a culmination of weeks of evaluation and preparation as the team aims to fine-tune their lineup for the upcoming campaign.
The Saints’ roster changes began with the termination of contracts for eight players who were part of the team’s preseason training camp. Among those released were linebacker Ryan Connelly, tight ends J.P. Holtz and Jesse James, tackle Storm Norton, cornerback Bradley Roby, linebacker Jaylon Smith, linebacker Ty Summers, and running back Darrel Williams. These decisions reflect a strategic balance between player performance, positional needs, and salary considerations.
In addition to the contract terminations, the Saints have also waived 26 players. This group includes a mix of rookies and players with varying levels of experience. Some of the notable names waived include safety Johnathan Abram, linebacker Nick Anderson, wide receiver Kawaan Baker, fullback Jake Bargas, wide receiver Lynn Bowden Jr., and defensive lineman Jerron Cage, among others. These young athletes had the opportunity to showcase their skills during the preseason, contributing to the overall competitive atmosphere within the team.
As the regular season approaches, the Saints’ coaching staff and management will shift their focus towards establishing a practice squad. This practice squad can include up to 16 players who, while not on the active roster, continue to work with the team, develop their skills, and potentially be called up to the main roster in the event of injuries or changing team needs.
The roster finalization process is a crucial stage in the NFL calendar, where teams must make tough decisions to assemble a squad that can compete at the highest level. The New Orleans Saints, a team known for their commitment to excellence, have carefully evaluated their options and made the necessary moves to build a roster that they believe will give them the best chance to succeed in the upcoming season.
