Saints Fire Head Coach Dennis Allen in Attempt to Salvage the Season
By Niles Carpenter, Saints Contributor
New Orleans Saints have parted ways with head coach Dennis Allen, following a narrow 23-22 defeat against division rival Carolina. According to reports from NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo, the decision to dismiss Allen comes as the Saints struggle to regain competitive footing in the NFC South.
The team officially announced the firing Monday, naming special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi as interim head coach. Saints owner Gayle Benson expressed gratitude for Allen’s dedication to the organization, acknowledging his significant contributions while emphasizing the necessity of the change. Allen, who took over the head coach role in 2022 after Sean Payton’s departure, compiled an 18-25 record, a stark contrast to the success the team had hoped to achieve this season.
With Rizzi now at the helm, the Saints are looking to reevaluate every aspect of the team as they attempt to rebuild mid-season. In his first press conference as interim coach, Rizzi addressed the need for a comprehensive review, but reassured that Derek Carr will continue as the team’s starting quarterback, maintaining stability at the position.
Carr, who currently holds a 67.9% completion rate, has logged 1,225 yards, nine touchdowns, and four interceptions, establishing himself as a consistent presence despite the team’s struggles. To support Rizzi’s transition, veteran special teams coach Marwan Maalouf will join the staff to assist with special teams duties. With a challenging Week 10 matchup against the NFC South-leading Atlanta Falcons, the Saints are under pressure to respond swiftly to the coaching shakeup and steer the season in a more promising direction.
