The New Orleans Saints are in the thick of their offseason coaching search, with head coach Kellen Moore working diligently to assemble a dynamic and experienced staff. Among the top candidates for the offensive coordinator position is Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach Doug Nussmeier, whose familiarity with Moore makes him a logical fit.
According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Nussmeier interviewed for the vacancy early this week. This marks another potential reunion for Nussmeier and Moore, as the two previously collaborated with the Dallas Cowboys, Los Angeles Chargers, and Eagles. Nussmeier’s deep ties to Louisiana, including his son Garrett’s role as LSU’s starting quarterback and his brief stint as a Saints quarterback in the mid-1990s, add further intrigue to the potential hire.
The Saints’ coaching search has cast a wide net, particularly for the offensive coordinator role. In addition to Nussmeier, Dolphins wide receivers coach Robert Prince is another candidate under consideration. Prince, 59, boasts a wealth of experience across the NFL and collegiate ranks, including a stint as Boise State’s offensive coordinator. Prince recently worked with the Dallas Cowboys before joining the Dolphins earlier this year.
This diverse background could make him an appealing choice to complement Moore’s offensive vision. Meanwhile, defensive coordinator interviews are also ongoing, with the Saints meeting with prominent names such as Eagles defensive backs coach Christian Parker, Vikings DBs coach Daronte Jones, and 49ers assistant head coach Brandon Staley. Each brings a unique resume, ensuring the Saints leave no stone unturned in their pursuit of top-tier coaching talent.
As Moore builds his staff, a few key hires have already been confirmed. Keith Williams will return as the wide receivers coach, bringing continuity and accountability to the position. Chase Haslett, son of former Saints head coach Jim Haslett, has been named tight ends coach, while Brendan Nugent steps in as offensive line coach.
Nugent’s familiarity with the Saints organization and his success with the Chargers adds credibility to his role. The Saints’ meticulous approach to staffing highlights their commitment to supporting Kellen Moore as he embarks on his first year at the helm. With a mix of fresh talent and seasoned expertise, the Saints are positioning themselves to rebound and contend in the NFC South.
