The New Orleans Saints have made a significant move to bolster their defense by reportedly signing veteran edge rusher Jason Pierre-Paul, as per Josina Anderson of CBS Sports. This acquisition comes after Pierre-Paul, a three-time Pro Bowler and two-time Super Bowl champion, showcased his abilities in a workout for the team on Monday, reported by Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. At 34, Pierre-Paul brings a wealth of experience and a notable track record to the Saints’ defense.
In his 2022 season with the Baltimore Ravens, he started in 13 games, contributing three sacks, 26 tackles (five for loss), and showcasing his versatility with an interception and five passes defensed.
Pierre-Paul’s career, highlighted by 94.5 sacks and seven seasons with at least seven sacks, adds a much-needed edge to the Saints’ pass rush. The team, currently standing at 5-5, has struggled in this area, tying for 25th in the NFL with only 18 sacks in 10 games.
The addition of Pierre-Paul could invigorate a defensive line that has seen underwhelming performances from key players like Cameron Jordan, who has only two sacks this year, a stark contrast to his 10.4 sacks per year average over the past 11 seasons. Carl Granderson has been a rare bright spot, matching his career-high of 5.5 sacks in just 10 games.
The signing of Pierre-Paul, once willing to join a playoff contender’s practice squad as reported by Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, demonstrates the Saints’ commitment to improving their defense as they push for a playoff spot.
