Saints’ Late Rally Falls Short in 20-19 Loss to Commanders

The New Orleans Saints battled back from a 17-point deficit but ultimately fell short in a heartbreaking 20-19 loss to the Washington Commanders on Sunday. Spencer Rattler, stepping in after a rough start by Jake Haener, ignited the offense with a late rally that nearly secured a dramatic comeback. With time expired, Rattler found tight end Foster Moreau for a touchdown that brought the Saints within one point.
However, the bold decision by interim coach Darren Rizzi to go for a two-point conversion proved costly, as Rattler’s pass to Juwan Johnson was broken up in tight coverage, leaving the Saints at 5-9 and on the brink of playoff elimination.
The Saints’ defense, despite taking a beating early, showed resilience throughout the game. Facing former LSU star Jayden Daniels, who delivered two first-half touchdowns to Terry McLaurin, New Orleans recorded an impressive eight sacks and forced several miscues from the Commanders. Daniels, who threw for 226 yards and added 66 on the ground, showcased his mobility with a critical third-and-14 scramble to set up a second-half field goal.
The Saints capitalized on Washington’s nine penalties and other missed opportunities, cutting into the deficit with creative play-calling, including a trick play touchdown where Cedrick Wilson Jr. connected with Alvin Kamara. Field goals by Blake Grupe further chipped away at the lead, setting up the dramatic final drive.
While the Saints displayed heart and determination, the absence of Derek Carr was felt, as they fell to 0-4 without their veteran quarterback. Haener struggled in his first career start, completing just 4 of 10 passes for 49 yards and an interception before being replaced. Rattler, however, provided a spark, passing for 135 yards and leading all four scoring drives.
Despite the valiant effort, the Saints’ inability to finish in key moments ultimately sealed their fate. With injuries mounting and the postseason hopes fading, New Orleans faces a tough road ahead as they prepare to visit the Green Bay Packers (9-4) on Dec. 23.
