Saints Make Roster Moves, Activate TE Juwan Johnson

By Niles Carpenter, Saints Contributor

The New Orleans Saints have made several important roster adjustments as the regular season approaches. Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis announced today that the team has activated starting tight end Juwan Johnson from the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. Johnson, who underwent foot surgery in mid-June, has passed his physical and is expected to return to practice in a limited capacity on Tuesday, according to Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football. His return marks a significant boost to the Saints’ offense, as Johnson’s role in the passing game will be crucial.

In addition to Johnson’s activation, the Saints have signed cornerback Joejuan Williams, a 6’3″, 212-pound defensive back who has spent time with the New England Patriots, Chicago Bears, and Minnesota Vikings. Williams brings experience and depth to the Saints’ secondary, having recorded 39 tackles, 10 pass breakups, and six special teams stops over 42 career games.

On a less positive note, the team has waived/injured center Sincere Haynesworth after he sustained an MCL sprain in Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers. If unclaimed, Haynesworth is expected to revert to the Saints’ injured reserve list.

The Saints also saw the return of star running back Alvin Kamara to practice after dealing with back tightness since August 13. Kamara’s presence, even in a limited practice, is a promising sign for the offense as he continues contract extension negotiations with the team.

Lastly, rookie cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry avoided a serious knee injury in Sunday’s preseason game and is on track to play in Week 1 against the Carolina Panthers.
