The New Orleans Saints faced significant developments during Day 3 of their mini camp, with the announcement that starting tight end Juwan Johnson will be sidelined for a while due to an upcoming foot surgery. According to NFL insider Adam Schefter, Johnson is expected to miss time in training camp and the preseason, though there is optimism he could be ready for the regular season. Johnson, a former wide receiver, played in 16 games last season, recording 37 catches for 368 yards and four touchdowns. He recently signed a two-year contract extension before the 2023 season, highlighting his importance to the Saints’ offensive scheme.

In other health-related news, defensive end Chase Young received a positive update following his offseason neck surgery. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that renowned neck specialist Dr. Robert Watkins provided a favorable prognosis during Young’s recent check-up. Although Young will undergo further tests in about six weeks, he plans to participate in training camp, bolstering the Saints’ defensive line with his anticipated return. This is a critical update as the Saints look to solidify their defense heading into the new season.
The Saints also made notable adjustments to their salary cap by restructuring the contract of versatile tight end Taysom Hill. The team converted $8.79 million of Hill’s salary into a signing bonus, creating $6.59 million in cap space. This move increases Hill’s 2025 salary cap number by $2.19 million to $17.986 million, while also setting up $9.7 million in void year salary cap charges for 2026 if Hill’s contract voids. With these financial maneuvers, the Saints now have a comfortable $12 million in cap space for 2024, positioning themselves well for future roster moves and potential mid-season acquisitions.
