Saints & RB Alvin Kamara Apart on Extension

Saints & RB Alvin Kamara Apart on Extension

By Niles Carpenter, Saints Contributor

The New Orleans Saints and star running back Alvin Kamara appear to be at an impasse over a potential contract extension. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Kamara missed the final day of minicamp due to contract-related issues. Kamara is currently set to earn $11.8 million this year, but the problem lies with the non-guaranteed $25 million he’s due next year. The Saints are unlikely to commit to that figure, and while Kamara is open to a reworked two-year deal to strengthen his guarantees in the first year, there hasn’t been much momentum in negotiations. Despite his dissatisfaction, Kamara reported to camp for conditioning tests and even posted a picture with former NFL running back Marshawn Lynch on Instagram, signaling his readiness to play.

General Manager Mickey Loomis acknowledged Kamara’s presence at camp and the broader issue of perceived underpayment among the organization. “I’d say 50 percent of our organization — players, coaches, administrators, scouts — feel like they’re underpaid … and believe they deserve and want more money,” Loomis stated. He expressed appreciation for Kamara’s professionalism and commitment to staying in shape, highlighting Kamara’s desire to win above all. Kamara’s performance last season, with 1,160 yards from scrimmage and six touchdowns in 13 games, underscores his value as a dual-threat and one of the Saints’ top offensive weapons. However, with seven NFL seasons under his belt and 10,048 yards from scrimmage along with 77 touchdowns, the Saints might let the market dictate Kamara’s value.
