Saints Reup with LB & All-Pro DB Leaves Town Without a Deal

The New Orleans Saints hosted All-Pro DB Justin Simmons for a visit on Wednesday, extending the trip to dinner. The former Denver Broncos safety, who was cut in March, met with head coach Dennis Allen, general manager Mickey Loomis, members of the coaching staff, and several Saints players. “Look, I thought it was a good visit,” Allen said. “I can’t tell you exactly where that stands right now. … We evaluate it from our standpoint. I think he’s going through an evaluation process from his standpoint of where he feels like that is.” At 30, Simmons, a two-time Pro Bowler and four-time second-team All-Pro, remains a highly regarded player with impressive career stats, including 603 tackles, 30 interceptions, and 64 passes defended through his eight seasons in the NFL.
Despite the productive visit, Simmons left town without a deal, as reported by NewOrleans.Football. One of the key sticking points is Simmons’ desire for a multi-year contract, while the Saints prefer a shorter-term commitment. The Saints are expected to continue evaluating their options and maintaining communication with Simmons’ representatives to find a mutually agreeable solution.
In other news, Saints LB Pete Werner signed a three-year contract extension worth over $25 million, including $17.5 million guaranteed, according to sources. The deal ties Werner to the Saints through the 2027 season. The former second-round pick has had a rollercoaster first three seasons but has shown flashes of brilliance, particularly against the run. Werner’s versatility in patrolling the middle or coming on blitzes provides head coach Allen’s defense with flexibility. The addition of veteran Willie Gay Jr. this offseason aims to push Werner to elevate his game entering Year 4.
The Saints’ recent moves reflect a strategic approach to strengthening their defense. While securing a talented player like Simmons would be a significant boost, ensuring the continued development of players like Werner is equally important. The team’s ability to balance immediate needs with long-term planning will be crucial as they navigate the upcoming season.
