The New Orleans Saints are known for using players in a variety of ways and they intend to do the same with Ty Montgomery. Joel Thomas, the running backs coach for the Saints, revealed how Montgomery fits into the team’s offense.
While speaking to Amie Just of NOLA.com, Thomas said he didn’t want to “pigeonhole” Montgomery into a certain position: “I see a Swiss army knife … The worst thing we could do right here today is, is sit there and pigeonhole and say, ‘Hey, you’re going to be put in this position and that’s it.’”
Montgomery began his career with the Green Bay Packers as a wide receiver. However, in his second season with the Packers, Montgomery made the transition to running back. In his second season in 2016, the former third-round pick rushed for 457 yards and three touchdowns. Despite being a running back for just five seasons, Thomas believes Montgomery has room for improvement in New Orleans:
“When you look back at it, he has only been a running back for five seasons so that’s where I see the piece of putty we can hopefully mold into what we want him to be within our offense.” read more
