In a strategic move to bolster their defensive lineup, the New Orleans Saints have picked cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry from the University of Alabama with the 41st overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft. The event, which took place on April 26, 2024, saw McKinstry, a standout junior from Birmingham, Alabama, join the Saints’ roster. At 6-foot-1, McKinstry is celebrated for his exceptional coverage skills and versatility, also contributing as a punt returner for the Crimson Tide.
His collegiate achievements are notable, including being named a first team All-American by both the Associated Press and The Sporting News, and a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award, which honors the nation’s top defensive back. During his final season at Alabama, McKinstry showcased his defensive talents with seven pass breakups and 32 tackles, including two for a loss, alongside returning 14 punts for a total of 86 yards.
The Saints’ decision to draft McKinstry follows a season of speculation around Pro Bowl cornerback Marshon Lattimore’s future with the team amidst ongoing trade rumors. Head coach Dennis Allen emphasized that McKinstry’s selection is aimed at deepening the defensive squad rather than indicating any immediate changes to their existing lineup. Despite the departure of cornerback Isaac Yiadom in free agency, the Saints are optimistic about their defensive depth.
McKinstry, who carved out a starting role in his freshman year and maintained it through subsequent seasons while managing punt return duties, is expected to bring dynamic play and solid defensive skills to the team as they prepare for the upcoming season.
