Saints Shake Up Roster, Send Lattimore to Commanders in Bold Trade
By Niles Carpenter, Saints Contributor
In a strategic move aimed at rebuilding amidst a challenging season, the New Orleans Saints have traded their star cornerback, Marshon Lattimore, to the Washington Commanders. This trade, involving a third-round pick, fourth-round pick, and sixth-round pick from Washington in exchange for Lattimore and a fifth-round pick, comes as the Saints look to address financial constraints and refocus after a seven-game losing streak and the recent dismissal of head coach Dennis Allen.
With the team sitting $61.5 million over the projected salary cap—the highest in the NFL—this decision underscores Gayle Benson’s commitment to reconfiguring the roster and alleviating financial pressure in preparation for a more sustainable future.
Though parting with a four-time Pro Bowler like Lattimore wasn’t easy, the Saints recognized the necessity of maximizing value while moving in a new direction. With Washington sending back New Orleans’ own sixth-round pick, which was originally traded for defensive tackle John Ridgeway III, the Saints secured multiple assets to support their upcoming rebuild.
As the Commanders push forward with a 7-2 record under rookie phenom quarterback Jayden Daniels, the Saints, led by newly implemented leadership, are preparing for a fresh chapter. This trade is a decisive step forward for New Orleans, acknowledging the need to adapt for long-term success while honoring the contributions Lattimore made to the team’s defense.
