The New Orleans Saints today have announced the addition of two promising running backs to their roster. In a statement released by Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis, it was revealed that Tony Jones Jr. and Jordan Mims have been signed to the practice squad. This strategic decision highlights the team’s commitment to enhancing their backfield strength and versatility.

Tony Jones Jr., standing at 5-11 and weighing 224 pounds, originally joined the Saints as an undrafted free agent in 2020 after his college stint at Notre Dame. Having showcased his skills in 18 games, including five starts, split between New Orleans and the Seattle Seahawks, Jones has demonstrated his value as a multifaceted player.

His 179 rushing yards and 59 receiving yards reflect his ability to contribute both on the ground and through the air. Notably, Jones’s preseason performance with the Denver Broncos in 2023 further underscored his abilities, amassing 66 rushing yards and 29 receiving yards, accompanied by a touchdown.

Complementing Jones’s addition is Jordan Mims, a standout talent who made waves during his college years at Fresno State. Mims, standing 6-0 tall and weighing 205 pounds, left a lasting impact during his five seasons at Fresno State, impressively garnering first-team All-Mountain West honors in 2022.

His preseason performance with the Buffalo Bills, where he carried the ball 11 times for 47 yards and secured four receptions for 45 yards, signaled his potential to excel at the professional level. Notably, Mims’s familiarity with Saints quarterback Jake Haener from their shared college days adds an intriguing dynamic to the team’s offensive strategies.

In a strategic move, the Saints also terminated the practice squad contracts of running back Ellis Merriweather and linebacker Ty Summers. This dynamic reshaping of the roster demonstrates the team’s commitment to refining their lineup and setting the stage for an exciting season ahead. With the addition of Tony Jones Jr. and Jordan Mims, the Saints are poised to present a dynamic and versatile running back corps that could provide a significant boost to their offensive room.
