The New Orleans Saints in 2020 have created a very loaded roster that’s infused with versatile talent. After the disappointing loss to the Minnesota Vikings, Coach Payton & crew decided to upgrade several positions on the team. The idea for Coach Payton & the brass was to upgrade the team in a way that it would be difficult to prepare for. So in the off season, the Saints focused on its perceived weakness’s and hit several key home runs that display versatility on the roster.
What makes the Black & Gold so dangerous this year, is its mindset of using position less players who will thrive in a wide-open attack. Below is a list of 7 position-less players who can and will help the Saints in the upcoming season.
1. QB Taysom Hill – Perhaps one of the most dangerous weapons for the team. Hill is listed as a QB but he plays WR,TE,RB & Special Teams if you need him too.
2. RB Alvin Kamara – Kamara is pro bowler over the last several seasons who listed as a RB but he easily can catch passes like a wide-out & contribute on kick/punt returns.
3. RB Ty Montgomery – The former Packer and Jet is listed as a RB but was used at wide-out as well. The key to Montgomery is his toughness and mentality to play a number of spots for the team including: special teams punt/kick returner, slot wide-out & third RB when needed.
4. WR Deonte Harris – Harris who earned a trip to the pro bowl as a returner last season is on par for another excellent year. Deonte’s speed is undeniable and makes him a match-up nightmare for the opposition. Coach Payton did remark that he plans on using Harris more in the offense at WR and perhaps RB.
5. TE Adam Trautman – The third round draft pick out of Dayton is listed as a TE but can be used in slot like a wide-receiver. Trautman has the size, hands and versatility to be a major force for the team this season.
6. LB Zack Baun – The first of the teams two third round picks from this years draft is listed as a LB but is much more. Baun can and will play inside and out as a LB, then be called upon to play edge rusher as well.
7. DB Chauncey Gardner Johnson – CGJ can play in the slot, line up outside in pinch and then drop back as a safety. He displayed much versatility last year and many see him as the teams top slot corner for the upcoming year.
Honorable mention: There are several offensive lineman candidates that play several positions: Andrus Peat (OT,OG), Erik McCoy (C,OG), Cam Tom (C,OG), Will Clapp (OT,OG,C), Calvin Throakmorton (OT,OG,C) and others. 7th round pick QB Tommy Stevens who Coach Payton said would play at several positions too.
The Saints are definitively one if not the deepest team in the NFL and their mindset of position less football will bring much success to Black & Gold faithful everywhere.
