SMU Stuns No. 22 Tulane in Championship Showdown

DALLAS, TX — The SMU Mustangs delivered a stunning upset over the No. 22 Tulane Green Wave with a decisive 26-14 victory. The Mustangs, elevating their record to 11-2, showcased a defensive masterclass, notably epitomized by their relentless assault on Tulane’s quarterback Michael Pratt, who was sacked a staggering seven times.

SMU’s triumph was not just in their offensive skills, led by Jennings who accounted for a touchdown pass and 266 yards, but also in their strategic defense which suffocated Tulane’s potent offense, limiting them to a mere two conversions out of fifteen third-down attempts. This was a game that could have significantly altered Tulane’s trajectory, potentially propelling them into a major New Year’s Day bowl game for a second consecutive year, echoing their previous success against USC in the Cotton Bowl.

However, SMU, ranked No. 25, had different plans as they clinched their first league title since the Southwest Conference victory in 1984. The game was a tale of missed opportunities and what-ifs for Tulane. Despite being only one touchdown behind at halftime, thanks to interceptions by Cam Pedescleaux and Jarius Monroe and an early missed field goal by SMU, the Green Wave struggled offensively. Injuries played a crucial role, sidelining key receiver Lawrence Keys and limiting Jha’Quan Jackson, which significantly hampered their offensive strategy.

Meanwhile, speculation around Tulane coach Willie Fritz’s potential move to Houston added an off-field dimension to the drama, though Fritz remained non-committal post-game. As both teams now await their bowl invitations, this match will be remembered as a defining moment in SMU’s history and a poignant lesson for Tulane in the unforgiving nature of championship football.
