Steelers, T.J. Watt agree to terms on record three-year, $123 million extension

There won’t be any contract drama in Pittsburgh this summer.

The Steelers and star pass rusher T.J. Watt have agreed to terms on a three-year, $123 million contract extension, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported on Thursday.

The new pact, which will net Watt $41 million per year, will make him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history, per Rapoport and Pelissero. Myles Garrett previously held that title at $40 million per year, a contract he signed in March.

Watt, who had skipped mandatory minicamp while seeking a new deal, avoids the potential distraction of a holdout and resets the pass-rushing market in the process. The extension comes one week ahead of when veterans are scheduled to arrive at Steelers training camp on July 23.

Watt’s impact in Pittsburgh has been insurmountable. Named the 2021 Defensive Player of Year after his single-season record tying 22.5 sacks, Watt has earned seven Pro Bowls and four first-team All-Pro honors along his eight-year career.
