TKO Boxing and Saudi Arabia: Shaping the Future of Superfights

By Oscar Cabrera, Boxing Contributor

TKO Group Holdings, known for its groundbreaking ventures in combat sports through its ownership of UFC and WWE, is making waves in the boxing world. Partnering with Saudi Arabia and Turki Alalshikh, TKO’s new boxing promotion is set to redefine the sport’s global appeal. Backed by Saudi Arabia’s financial power and TKO’s logistical expertise, the promotion promises to deliver a blend of spectacular “superfights” and consistently engaging events.

According to TKO President and COO Mark Shapiro, fans can expect 12 fight cards annually over the next five years, with one to four blockbuster matchups per year. The highly anticipated clash between undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and former junior welterweight and welterweight king Terence Crawford on September 12 epitomizes the promotion’s ambition to create unparalleled excitement in boxing.

The Alvarez vs. Crawford superfight will serve as the launchpad for TKO Boxing, with its inaugural event setting the tone for a series of global spectacles. Shapiro revealed that Saudi Arabia would fund these marquee events, while TKO would oversee the media rights and undercard programming. Despite the promise of high-caliber bouts, questions remain about the roster composition, as many elite fighters are currently bound to other promotions.

Nevertheless, TKO’s partnership with Saudi Arabia hints at the potential to attract premier talent with lucrative offers and unparalleled exposure. As fans eagerly await the announcement of TKO Boxing’s official branding and additional details, the partnership is poised to challenge traditional boxing norms and usher in a thrilling new era for the sport.
