Pelican Faithfull Question Teams Future Heading into Offseason
By Rell Wright, Pelicans Contributor
As the New Orleans Pelicans reel from a stark 0-4 exit from the playoffs, the offseason brings a wave of uncertainty that has fans and analysts alike questioning the team’s direction. Despite finishing the regular season with an impressive 49 wins, the team’s postseason performance has spotlighted critical issues in the roster and management’s decisions.
With Brandon Ingram seeking a near-max extension estimated at $208 million and both Zion Williamson and CJ McCollum already locked into hefty contracts, financial constraints are tightening. The focus now shifts to younger players like Trey Murphy III, who after stepping up in Williamson’s frequent absences, is reportedly in line for a contract that could exceed $100 million, according to insiders Will Guillory and Michael Scotto.
All year, the Pelicans were the brash, fearless team determined to exorcise their demons of the past.

The Pelicans’ strategic decisions under Vice President David Griffin have also come under scrutiny. Griffin, alongside Head Coach Willie Green and GM Trajan Langdon, were quietly extended in late 2023, a move revealed only after the season concluded. This secrecy has sparked debates on the franchise’s transparency and decision-making, especially compared to other teams in the conference who have not shied away from making bold changes. For instance, the Phoenix Suns replaced Coach Frank Vogel with Mike Budenholzer despite Vogel’s decent season performance, signaling a proactive approach that some Pelicans supporters find lacking in their own management.
Moreover, the Pelicans face potential roster upheavals with Jonas Valanciunas, Cody Zeller, and Naji Marshall likely on their way out, raising further questions about the team’s vision. The point guard slot remains a dilemma: whether to trade for a seasoned player or to develop top ten pick Dyson Daniels. Additionally, there’s speculation around what a Willie Green-style center might look like and whether the team can even afford one given their current salary cap constraints.
The Pelican Postgame Report (PPR) contributors have highlighted these issues, noting a need for an upgrade in experience and basketball IQ, particularly at the coaching level. As the offseason unfolds, the Pelicans are poised on the cusp of potentially transformative decisions. While the future remains clouded with more questions than answers, it is clear that this summer will be pivotal in shaping the trajectory of the franchise. The Pelicans’ faithful, though wary, await decisive actions that could either stabilize the team or herald a new era of rebuilding.
