DURHAM, N.C. — Tulane opened the 2026 season with a frustrating 17–3 road loss to Duke on Saturday at Wallace Wade Stadium.

Duke establishes the ground game early
The Blue Devils opened with a 17-play, 75-yard touchdown drive that consumed nearly 10 minutes. Nate Sheppard finished the possession with a nine-yard scoring run.
Tulane kept the deficit manageable, but a Cosme Salas field goal at the end of the second quarter gave Duke a 10–0 halftime lead. A fourth-quarter chance slips away
Tulane finally cut the deficit to 10–3 early in the fourth quarter. Duke answered with a 75-yard touchdown drive, capped by Sheppard’s 14-yard run with 6:44 remaining.

Finishing possessions becomes the priority
The concern for Tulane goes beyond losing a road opener. Three points leave almost no margin for mistakes, even when the score remains close deep into the game.
The Green Wave’s next evaluation should begin with its scoring opportunities: what prevented promising possessions from becoming touchdowns, and which adjustments can produce more reliable offense? That requires reviewing protection, decision-making and execution together before assigning the entire result to any one position.
There is also a defensive lesson. Keeping the game within reach mattered, but Duke’s answer immediately after Tulane scored prevented the Green Wave from building pressure on the home team.
