The New Orleans Saints believe quarterback Tyler Shough is entering the most important season of his young NFL career. After flashing poise and leadership during an encouraging rookie campaign, the former second-round pick now enters Year 2 with something every young quarterback covets—continuity.
From head coach Kellen Moore‘s offensive system to an upgraded supporting cast, nearly every piece around Shough has improved. While many national analysts continue to overlook New Orleans entering the 2026 season, the Saints appear convinced their young quarterback is prepared to reward that confidence.
As training camp approaches, there are several reasons optimism surrounding Shough continues to grow.
Rookie Season Built a Foundation
Statistics rarely tell the complete story of a rookie quarterback, and that certainly applies to Tyler Shough.
Taking over during a difficult 2025 campaign, Shough displayed composure beyond his experience. Rather than forcing plays, he showed patience in the pocket, protected the football, and demonstrated the ability to make quick decisions within Moore’s offensive philosophy.
Perhaps most importantly, he earned the respect of his teammates.
Veterans consistently praised his preparation, leadership, and willingness to learn. Those qualities helped stabilize a team navigating injuries and significant roster turnover throughout the season.
Instead of viewing Year 1 solely through wins and losses, the Saints viewed it as proof that Shough possesses the mental makeup required to become a long-term NFL starter.
Continuity Could Be His Biggest Advantage
One of the biggest obstacles facing rookie quarterbacks is constant change.
Fortunately for Shough, that won’t be the case this season.
He returns with another year inside Kellen Moore’s offensive system, allowing him to spend less time learning concepts and more time mastering them.
That familiarity should translate into:
Faster pre-snap recognition
Better timing with receivers
Increased confidence attacking defenses
Greater command at the line of scrimmage
Instead of simply reacting, Shough now has an opportunity to dictate the offense.
For young quarterbacks, that often marks the biggest leap in development.
Better Weapons Around the Quarterback
New Orleans also invested heavily in surrounding its young signal caller with more talent.
The Saints still feature one of the NFL’s premier receivers in Chris Olave, while the running game could become one of football’s most dangerous with Alvin Kamara and newcomer Travis Etienne sharing the backfield.
The 2026 draft also added exciting offensive weapons, including first-round receiver Jordyn Tyson and athletic tight end Oscar Delp, giving Moore greater flexibility to attack defenses.
Those additions should create more favorable matchups while reducing the pressure placed solely on the quarterback.
Instead of carrying the offense, Shough simply needs to distribute the football efficiently.
The Offensive Line Could Make the Difference
Quarterback development begins up front.
If Pro Bowl center Erik McCoy remains healthy alongside an improved offensive line, Shough should benefit from significantly cleaner pockets than he experienced last season.
Protection allows quarterbacks to play on schedule.
It also allows offensive coordinators to utilize deeper route concepts and more aggressive play-action opportunities.
With McCoy directing the offensive line and continuity across the unit, New Orleans hopes consistency replaces the injury issues that plagued previous seasons.
That stability could become one of the biggest reasons for offensive improvement.
Kellen Moore’s Vision Is Taking Shape
When Kellen Moore accepted the Saints’ head coaching position, he emphasized building an offense around efficiency, balance, and explosive opportunities.
Those principles fit Tyler Shough’s skill set.
Rather than asking him to carry games through constant improvisation, Moore wants his quarterback making smart decisions, utilizing playmakers, and attacking favorable matchups.
A strong running game featuring Kamara and Etienne should also create more single-high safety looks, opening opportunities downfield for Olave, Tyson, Devaughn Vele, and the rest of New Orleans’ receiving corps.
Everything about the offensive construction points toward helping the quarterback succeed.
Why National Analysts May Be Missing the Bigger Picture
Several preseason rankings continue placing New Orleans near the bottom of the NFL.
Those projections largely reflect last season’s record rather than the roster entering 2026.
Internally, the Saints see a much different team.
The roster is healthier.
The offense is deeper.
The coaching staff enters its second year together.
Most importantly, the quarterback now has valuable starting experience.
Quarterback growth often changes the trajectory of an entire franchise. New Orleans believes Tyler Shough could be the catalyst for that turnaround.
Final Thoughts
Training camp will offer the first real glimpse into how much Tyler Shough has progressed.
The expectations surrounding him have grown, but so have the resources available to help him succeed.
If the offensive line stays healthy, the running game performs as expected, and the young playmakers continue developing, the Saints may possess one of the NFL’s most improved offenses.
For Tyler Shough, Year 2 isn’t simply about proving he belongs.
It’s about proving he can become the quarterback who leads New Orleans back into playoff contention.
