USC Edges LSU 27-20 in Thrilling Season Opener! | Highlights & Analysis

by Milton Manningham/ LSU Football Contributor

LSU Tigers fall short in their season opener against USC, losing 27-20 in a nail-biting finish at Allegiant Stadium. Despite a strong showing from LSU fans, who made up about 60% of the record-setting crowd of 63,969, the Tigers could not secure the win.

This marks the third consecutive season-opening loss for LSU under Coach Brian Kelly, snapping their four-game winning streak from last season. The game came down to the final seconds, with USC’s Woody Marks scoring a 13-yard touchdown run with just eight seconds remaining to seal the victory for the Trojans.

Miller Moss, USC’s quarterback, delivered a standout performance, throwing for 378 yards and a touchdown. His crucial 20-yard pass to Kyron Hudson, combined with a targeting penalty against LSU, set up the game-winning score.

Meanwhile, LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier showed promise, completing 29 of 38 passes for 304 yards and two touchdowns. Both quarterbacks, who previously played behind Heisman Trophy winners, showcased their skills in a highly competitive matchup that featured remarkable catches and missed opportunities.

LSU (0-1) will look to bounce back in Week Two as they return home to face the Nicholls Colonels (0-1), aiming to regroup and secure their first win of the season.
