WBC Gives Haney Breathing Room: Clash with Prograis Remains on the Table

WBC Gives Haney Breathing Room: Clash with Prograis Remains on the Table

by Oscar Cabrero/ Boxing Contributor

Devin Haney, the reigning WBC lightweight champion, has been granted a crucial six-day extension by the WBC, pushing the deadline until July 27th to make a critical decision regarding his next title defense. The options before Haney are twofold: either defend his title against Shakur Stevenson in the 135-pound division or make a daring move up to the 140-pound weight class to face WBC light welterweight champion, Regis Prograis. The extension was requested by Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn, who needed more time to arrange the highly-anticipated showdown between Prograis and Haney.

WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman confirmed that both Haney and Prograis submitted a joint petition for the extension, indicating that both fighters require additional time to negotiate and finalize the terms of their potential clash. Unfortunately, this means that Shakur Stevenson, with an impressive undefeated record of 20-0 and 10 knockouts, finds himself on the outside looking in, missing his opportunity to challenge Haney for the chance to become the undisputed lightweight champion. Fans will eagerly await Haney’s decision, as both potential matchups carry significant weight in the boxing world, and his choice will undoubtedly impact the landscape of the lightweight and light welterweight divisions.
