What’s Next for Valanciunas and Kira Lewis Jr. in New Orleans?

The New Orleans Pelicans have solidified Jonas Valanciunas as their starting center for the upcoming season, as reported by William Guillory of The Athletic. Despite some defensive concerns in late-game situations last season, Valanciunas remains a reliable presence in the middle, having missed only 11 games over the past two years.

During the offseason, the Pelicans explored trade options, including discussions with the Cleveland Cavaliers regarding Jarrett Allen and the Detroit Pistons regarding Isaiah Stewart. However, no significant progress has been made on these trade fronts. Valanciunas, with an expiring $15.4 million contract, is likely to remain a subject of trade rumors until the February deadline. Guillory anticipates the Pelicans will continue to seek upgrades at the center position, potentially involving Valanciunas, point guard Kira Lewis, and draft picks in trade packages.

Pelicans management has some time to evaluate their core players, including Trey Murphy, whose contract extension won’t take effect until the 2025/26 season. The current core, featuring Brandon Ingram, Zion Williamson, CJ McCollum, and Herbert Jones, showed promise in the previous season but fell short of making the playoffs. The front office aims to avoid the luxury tax this year but believes this is the most talented group the franchise has ever assembled.

Despite some struggles with Team USA, Pelicans fans need not be overly concerned about Brandon Ingram’s performance.

Lastly, there is optimism surrounding Zion Williamson‘s commitment to his fitness and preparation for the upcoming season. Guillory shared workout photos of Williamson and highlighted his dedication and focus on returning strong. Williamson’s health is crucial to the Pelicans’ playoff aspirations, especially after being limited to just 29 games due to injuries in the previous season. His determination and readiness will be closely monitored by Pelicans fans and the organization alike.
