In a gutsy display of resilience, the New Orleans Pelicans defied the odds and took down the Philadelphia 76ers, 123-115, on Friday night. Playing without Zion Williamson, who was sidelined due to a one-game suspension for repeated lateness, the Pelicans leaned heavily on veteran guard CJ McCollum. McCollum delivered a masterful performance, scoring 38 points on an efficient 10-of-20 shooting from the field, including four three-pointers.
The absence of key defensive stopper Herb Jones, who is out indefinitely with a shoulder injury, left New Orleans vulnerable on the defensive end, but the team’s collective effort and timely shooting ensured they would snap a two-game losing streak. Jordan Hawkins and Dejounte Murray added crucial support with 11 and 17 points, respectively, helping the Pelicans notch only their third victory since early December.
Despite a valiant effort from Tyrese Maxey, who recorded 30 points and 12 assists, and Paul George’s 25-point, 11-rebound outing, the 76ers were unable to overcome the Pelicans’ tenacity. Missing their All-Star anchor Joel Embiid for the third consecutive game due to a sprained foot, Philadelphia struggled to maintain consistency on both ends of the floor.
A pivotal moment came midway through the third quarter when Hawkins drained a three-pointer to give the Pelicans a 70-67 lead, followed by a triple from Murray to extend it further. McCollum sealed the win in the final period with a clutch step-back jumper, capping off a much-needed triumph for the eight-win Pelicans. Next up, New Orleans faces a daunting challenge against the Boston Celtics on Sunday.
