Zion Out Indefinitely with Left Hamstring Strain, Trey Murphy III is back
By Rell Wright, Pelicans Contributor
The New Orleans Pelicans have announced that star forward Zion Williamson is out indefinitely due to a left hamstring strain, as confirmed by medical imaging on Saturday. Williamson sustained the injury during the second quarter of a game against the Cleveland Cavaliers earlier this week. Despite briefly returning to the court and delivering an impressive 23-point performance in the second half, he was sidelined for the following game against the Orlando Magic.
This injury adds to the Pelicans’ mounting woes, as they are already missing key players like CJ McCollum, Dejounte Murray, and Trey Murphy III. The Pelicans, who drafted Williamson first overall in 2019, are once again grappling with the absence of their franchise cornerstone, who has now missed 210 out of 400 possible games since joining the league.
The Pelicans’ injury list is growing, leaving the team severely short-handed in a crucial stretch of the season. With Williamson expected to miss several weeks, sources like ESPN’s Shams Charania indicate a difficult road ahead for New Orleans as they strive to stay competitive in the Western Conference. Alongside Zion, the team’s injury report includes standout names like Herbert Jones (shoulder), Jordan Hawkins (back), and Trey Murphy III (hamstring), who is eyeing a return next week against the Brooklyn Nets.
The Pelicans are currently navigating a challenging phase, missing six of their top eight scorers. Williamson’s latest setback underscores a season already marked by struggles with health and consistency, raising concerns about the team’s playoff hopes as they fight to remain in the postseason conversation.
