New York, New York- The Heavyweight Championship bout between Joshua & heavy underdog Andy Ruiz Jr turned out to be anything but the mundane last saturday night. The former champion was floored four times in the match verses Ruiz which ultimately ended in a seven round stoppage. Not too many fans that followed the fight was giving Andy Ruiz Jr a chance to win against the undefeated Joshua, who blazed a trail of knockouts to unify all but one of the heavyweight straps.
The whole fight from pre fight press conference to post fight press conference was very strange to me as a writer. The fact that after Miller bombed out the drug tests Ruiz steps in late on short notice should have given Joshua’s teams pause. Ruiz Jr knew that he can take advantage of “Flaws” in Joshua’s game. He admitted that he knew he can expose AJ with this hand speed & punching power.
Ruiz did suffer a knockdown the first of his career but he reset & put AJ down 4 times to finish the match. He went on to become the 1st Mexican Heavyweight Champion EVER! As for a Joshua is concerned leading up to the match rumors of a pre fight anxiety attack were AJ’s father push to call the fight off. The fact that Joshua was dropped in sparring sessions were he is usually pretty sturdy should have been a red flag. The history of UK fighters that come to the USA to defend their titles isn’t very good usually ending in defeat. Then of course there’s the Drake course were the entertainer posed with Joshua in a pic almost granting defeat, ok the last one is kinda a joke.
The Joshua’s team promoter Eddie Hearn overruled the call off & decided to precede with the bout. The strange pre fight press conference in which Anthony Joshua allowed Andy Ruiz Jr to pose with his belts & the super relaxed cool way AJ displayed during the post fight interviews, has some questioning his killer instinct.
The AJ Team trigger a rematch clause in the agreement for later this year possibly in October or November The location of the fight is yet to be determined with Hearn’s saying the UK were Joshua is from & Ruiz Jr saying Mexico.
