Brian Schottenheimer on offensive stats amid Cowboys struggles: 'Shove them up your ass'

When it comes to why the Dallas Cowboys hold a 3-4-1 record, it’s no secret as to what the issue is. Defense is a major problem for head coach Brian Schottenheimer , being among the worst, if not the worst, out there. The opposite can be said about the Dallas offense, finding ways to play at an elite level.

Schottenheimer does not appear too invested in the offense’s performance, though. Since the record is not up to where the Cowboys want to be, everybody is getting held accountable. He even suggested taking the incredible offensive stats and placing them somewhere else.

“None of us have done good enough,” Schottenheimer said via The Athletic ‘s John Machota. “That’s real. Our scorecard is what it is. We’re a football team that’s 3-4-1. You can take the stats on offense and shove them up your ass as far as I’m concerned. We want to win.”

Well, let’s lay out the offensive stats here instead of other places. The Cowboys are second in the league in points scored and total yards. Dak Prescott is third in the NFL with 2,069 passing yards but some throws from Joe Milton mean nobody has thrown for more than Dallas. Even the run game is finding more success than thought coming into the season, ranking 13th in rushing yards and top five in touchdowns.

If anything, Schottenheimer should want the defensive stats to go into hiding. Looking at the same categories, only one team is worse in points and yards allowed. Teams throw the ball on the Cowboys’ secondary at will, ranking 31st in passing yards and dead last in touchdowns given up. If that does not work for some reason, 1,168 rushing yards have already been given up by Dallas this season — good enough for 29th.
