AUBURN, Ala. — LSU took the noise out of Jordan-Hare Stadium and brought home the kind of SEC road victory its season needed.
The No. 18 Tigers defeated Auburn 38–17 on Saturday, improving to 6–2 overall and 3–2 in conference play. Sam Leavitt supplied four total touchdowns, Jackson Harris delivered the explosive plays, and LSU’s defense repeatedly disrupted Auburn’s offense. Auburn fell to 4–3 and 2–3 in the SEC. For Lane Kiffin’s team, this was an encouraging answer to an uncomfortable question: could LSU carry its best football away from Baton Rouge? The result ended an eight-game SEC road losing streak. Associated Press recap
Leavitt gives LSU control
Leavitt completed 32 of 45 passes for 387 yards and three touchdowns, added 54 rushing yards and another score, and avoided an interception. Associated Press recap
The encouraging part of that performance is what it suggests about LSU’s offensive ceiling. A quarterback who can threaten a defense through the air and keep a drive alive with his legs gives a play caller more ways to respond. Defenders cannot simply attack one problem and assume the possession will end.
Before the trip, Kiffin said Leavitt was becoming more comfortable with his teammates, adding, “You get better as you learn.” Saturday provided another reason to believe that familiarity is turning into production. LSU had beaten Mississippi State 31–0 the previous week. LSU game preview
The next standard is repeatability. LSU needs this combination of aggression and ball security when a game stays tight into the fourth quarter, too.
Harris delivers the separation
Harris produced a career-best 178 receiving yards, giving LSU a major source of explosive offense. SEC recap
His biggest contribution came when Auburn had a chance to make the afternoon uncomfortable. After the home team cut the deficit to 17–10, Harris scored on a 70-yard touchdown reception. LSU answered in just three plays. Leavitt later scored from four yards out with 17 seconds left before halftime, sending LSU into the break ahead 31–10. Official LSU box score
That response deserves attention. Road games can change quickly when the crowd senses an opening. LSU immediately restored its cushion, then added another touchdown before Auburn could regroup.
From an offensive standpoint, the value of a receiver like Harris extends beyond his own catches. A defense worried about giving up a long gain has harder choices to make about how aggressively it crowds the shorter areas of the field.
Green returns with a useful contribution
Trey’Dez Green returned after missing four games with a knee injury and contributed five catches for 50 yards and a touchdown. Associated Press recap
For LSU, getting a productive tight end back creates more possibilities. Green can give Leavitt another option when coverage closes off an outside receiver, and his presence gives the offense another player opponents must account for near the goal line.
His production was encouraging. His ability to remain available through the closing stretch will matter even more.
LSU makes Auburn earn every yard
The defense supplied the force behind the victory: seven sacks and 12 tackles for loss. Jordan Ross recorded two sacks, while Auburn finished with 67 net rushing yards. College rushing totals include sack losses, an important distinction when evaluating that number. Official LSU box score
The matchup made those results especially meaningful. Auburn entered after beating then-No. 1 Georgia 27–24, and quarterback Byrum Brown presented an established running threat. Auburn’s own preview highlighted that he had rushed for at least 100 yards in consecutive games. Auburn game preview
My read: LSU’s disruption was the defensive difference. Against a mobile quarterback, pressure needs discipline. A defender who chases too far upfield can create the escape route he was supposed to close. The sack production and limited net rushing output suggest LSU struck a productive balance between attacking Brown and restricting Auburn’s movement.
That is a promising foundation. The challenge is carrying the same approach into matchups against offenses that can punish a missed assignment with one throw.

The win still leaves work to do
LSU finished 5 of 13 on third down, committed seven penalties for 50 yards, and went scoreless in the third quarter. Official LSU box score
Those are the areas that should keep the film session honest. Explosive plays can create separation, but an offense also needs dependable answers when a defense forces it to convert another third down. Penalties can turn an otherwise manageable possession into a stalled drive.
The scoreless third quarter is another useful reminder. LSU had built a substantial lead, so there was no reason to become reckless. Even so, a team trying to establish itself among the SEC’s best should keep looking for ways to finish possessions after halftime.
This was a strong win. It also offered specific details the coaching staff can address without searching for something to criticize.
A stronger position heading into November
LSU has an open week before hosting Alabama on November 7. Associated Press recap
The road ahead still demands consistency. A convincing afternoon at Auburn does not settle the conference race or guarantee a place in the postseason. It does give LSU a better starting point for the next stretch: evidence that its offense can create separation in a difficult setting and that its defense can take away an opponent’s preferred way to play.
The Tigers earned this result through quarterback production, timely explosive plays and pressure that kept Auburn working uphill. Now they have to make those qualities part of their weekly identity.
LSU left the Plains with a win worth enjoying—and a standard worth repeating.
