The New Orleans Pelicans are actively seeking to fill the lead point guard role this offseason. Last season, the Pelicans employed a point guard-by-committee approach that often backfired, especially in clutch moments. This strategy contributed to their dismal 0-29 record in games where they trailed heading into the fourth quarter. Some critics attribute this to a lack of strategic planning by Head Coach Willie Green. Additionally, with the team hesitant to give forward Brandon Ingram the expensive extension he seeks, a trade involving Ingram for a lead guard is a likely scenario to bring stability in crucial game moments.
The New Orleans Pelicans reportedly hold Dejounte Murray in higher regard than they do Trae Young, per @cclark_13

There are numerous reports linking the Pelicans to several high-profile guards, including Atlanta’s Trae Young and Dejounte Murray, as well as Cleveland’s Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland. Each of these players would complement team superstar Zion Williamson effectively. However, securing the right player will depend on the assets and draft capital required and finding a suitable scheme fit. Trae Young, with his impressive averages of 25.7 points and 10.8 assists per game last season, is an intriguing option, though his hefty $43 million annual salary and defensive liabilities are significant considerations. Similarly, Darius Garland’s situation hinges on Donovan Mitchell’s contract decisions, with Garland’s 18 points and 6 assists per game making him a valuable yet potentially available asset.
The Pelicans’ previous attempt to acquire Dejounte Murray failed due to Atlanta’s demand for defensive stopper Herb Jones. This offseason, circumstances might be different as the Hawks could be more motivated to trade Murray and another asset for Brandon Ingram. Murray’s contract is more manageable at $28 million annually, and his all-around game, highlighted by averages of 22.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 6.4 assists, makes him an ideal fit for New Orleans. As the offseason progresses, other potential targets may emerge, but Dejounte Murray currently appears to be the best option for the Pelicans to solidify their point guard position. Stay tuned for further developments.
