In a surprising turn of events, the New Orleans Pelicans have emerged as a potential destination for Atlanta Hawks‘ guard Dejounte Murray, as per NBA insider Chris Haynes. Despite the Los Angeles Lakers being the frontrunners in the chase for the former All-Star, the Pelicans have reportedly shown a keen interest, positioning themselves as a sleeper team in the pursuit of Murray. Although Haynes clarified that a deal has yet to materialize, the very notion of New Orleans being “very much in play” underscores the dynamic nature of NBA trade discussions.
The Hawks, sitting at a 22-28 record, have been open to offers for Murray, a player who has previously been linked primarily with the Lakers. However, with Los Angeles potentially opting to conserve assets for a more significant acquisition in the upcoming offseason, the Pelicans’ involvement introduces an intriguing twist to the narrative.
The appeal of the Pelicans as a trade partner lies in their depth of young, promising talent and the flexibility provided by larger contracts on their roster. Players like Herbert Jones, Trey Murphy III, Jordan Hawkins, and Dyson Daniels represent the kind of burgeoning talent that could entice a team like the Hawks, looking to rebuild or retool around young, high-upside players.
Additionally, the contracts of CJ McCollum and Jonas Valanciunas could offer the financial compatibility needed to facilitate such a trade. Currently positioned seventh in the Western Conference with a 29-21 record, the Pelicans appear to be in a phase where bolstering their lineup with a player of Murray’s caliber could significantly impact their playoff aspirations. Given their previous interest in acquiring a star center, the Pelicans’ pivot to Murray, once a divisional foe with the San Antonio Spurs, indicates a strategic shift aimed at strengthening their guard rotation and overall team competitiveness.
