Saints Bolster Defensive Line with Chase Young Extension and Davon Godchaux Trade

By Niles Carpenter, Saints Contributor

The New Orleans Saints have taken significant steps to fortify their defensive front, securing a multi-year extension with defensive end Chase Young and acquiring veteran nose tackle Davon Godchaux via trade. The Saints have reached an agreement with Young on a three-year contract worth up to $57 million, locking in the former Defensive Rookie of the Year after a promising 2024 campaign in New Orleans.

Young, who overcame early career setbacks from injuries, proved his value last season by playing in all 17 games and recording 5.5 sacks. At just 25 years old, Young brings both dynamic pass-rushing ability and untapped potential to a defensive line looking to dominate for years to come. With Young solidified on the edge, the Saints continue to invest in a core capable of disrupting opposing offenses.

In a complementary move, the Saints acquired nose tackle Davon Godchaux from the New England Patriots in exchange for a 2026 seventh-round pick. Godchaux, a Louisiana native and LSU alumnus, returns home to add size and veteran leadership to the Saints’ interior defensive line.

The 6-foot-3, 330-pound run-stopper has been a model of consistency, starting 67 of 68 games for New England over the past four seasons. Known for his ability to clog running lanes and anchor against double teams, Godchaux will play a critical role in shoring up the Saints’ run defense.
